    Description
Prerequisite: ENGL C1000 (formerly ENGLISH 101) with a grade of "C" or better. This introduction to critical thinking and critical writing course provides students with opportunities to learn techniques of practical reasoning and argumentation. The course emphasizes the application of these techniques in the writing of a sequence of argumentative essays. Course topics include: critical reading, argu- ment analysis, recognizing propaganda and stereotypes, clarifying ambiguity, meaning and definition, evaluating evidence, logical correctness vs factual correct- ness, and common mistakes in reasoning (formal and informal fallacies). Sample arguments from philosophy and from culturally diverse sources in other disci- plines are analyzed with an emphasis on critical writing strategies.
