    Description
Prerequisite: ENGL C1000 (formerly ENGLISH 101) with a grade of "C" or better. This course acquaints students with the work of queer (gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, or gender non-conforming) writers, historical and contemporary, who have made important contributions to literature. Queer issues and relation- ships (both overt and in subtext) are examined in both historical and contempo- rary contexts. Students read works by Whitman, Baldwin, Walker, Kushner, and Highsmith among others. In addition, students become familiar with queer theo- ry and use the work of writers such as Foucault, Butler, and Rich to analyze texts and write critical essays that analyze predominate themes in this literature.
