    Description
Students explore the arts of Africa and the African Diaspora through the analysis of historical, cultural, religious, and sociopolitical contexts, as well as the styles and functions of art. Students use art history vocabulary and methodologies to evalu- ate various works of visual art including sculpture, architecture, ceramics, textiles, and personal adornments. Additionally, students critically examine colonialism, the Diaspora, and commonly-held Western assumptions and stereotypes about non-Western cultures. Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to demonstrate an understanding of transitions in the national geography of the African continent from the 17th century to the present through demonstrat- ing an understanding of the ethnic diversity and distinct artistic traditions among the peoples of Africa.
