The course explores the richness and diversity of Native North American cultures through multiple anthropological, social scientific, and interdisciplinary perspectives. In addition to providing an overview of the major indigenous North American culture areas, the course will consider relevant contemporary Native American issues, including: historical contexts of federal policies and institutions, social change and politics, language and identity, repatriation and land claims, environmental and sacred sites protection, health concerns, and casino gaming, mascots, and popular culture representations.
