This entry-level course provides an overview of the agencies involved in wildland fire management, their missions, and the varied methods used to prevent, manage, and suppress wildland fires across different jurisdictions. Students will become familiar with the terminology, tools, and safety practices commonly used in the wildland fire environment. Through classroom discussions, research, and hands-on lab activities, students will examine real-world case studies including fatality and mishap fires to identify contributing factors and lessons learned that continue to shape modern safety practices. The course also emphasizes the mental and physical preparation required to pursue a successful and resilient career in wildland firefighting.
