    Description
    This course surveys the historical and cultural development of children's literature. It focuses on critically reading and analytically responding to various forms of children's literature beginning with the oral tradition and its multicultural roots and extending to contemporary texts. The course reviews the social, emotional, and cognitive role literature plays for children. Course topics include the history of children's literature, literary genres, dominant elements and conventions, mainstream and academic responses to children's literature, and criteria for evaluating and books for children.
