This course offers a non-sectarian, general introduction to the Bible (Hebrew Bible and New Testament) as a literary text and a text in translation. The course studies the cultural, historical, and literary contexts out of which the Hebrew Bible and the New Testament emerged, the formation of their canons, the history of translations into English, the challenges with reading a text in translation, critical approaches to the texts, representations of major characters, the persistence and transformation of major themes, literary genres central to literature in the Ancient Near East and the Roman Empire, and the influence of the Bible on Western literary texts.
