    Description
This honors course is designed to develop the fundamentals of communicating in Japanese, including listening, comprehension, reading, writing, and basic conversation. The emphasis is on the comprehension of native spoken and written Japanese. The course introduces reading and writing Japanese syllabic symbols and selected kanji characters. It also presents general aspects of Japanese culture. Throughout the course, grammar plays a supportive role in the acquisition of basic competency in reading, writing, speaking, and understanding Japanese. This honors course will be enriched through limited class size, an extensive research project, and a presentation in Japanese. JA 1H is equivalent to two years of high school Japanese. Credit may be earned in either JA 1 or 1H, but not both.
