    ERTH 20, GEOL 1 or GEOL 23, 1: Recognize, name, and categorize the common minerals and rocks found in the crust of the Earth. 2. Recognize and compare common landforms found on continents and in ocean basins. 3. Explain the elements of plate tectonics and evaluate the influence of plate tectonics on crustal geologic features. 4. Interpret topographic maps, geologic maps, topographic profiles, and geologic cross-sections. 5. Perform elementary calculations in earthquake seismology. 6. Describe and evaluate common and developing geological theories. OR ERTH 20: Describe and evaluate geologic processes that both form and destroy the crust of the Earth. 2. Describe and analyze oceanographic processes that affect shorelines as well as those that affect global climate conditions. 3. Describe and interpret meteorologic processes that affect continental and oceanic environments. 4. Evaluate various theories of the origin of the universe, the solar system, and the Earth. 5. Interpret topographic maps, weather maps, geologic maps, and cross-sections. 6. Identify common rocks and minerals found in the Earth's crust. 7. Classify basic cloud formations and do elementary weather forecasting. 8. List the various ocean currents and explain their relationship to global climate conditions. 9. Describe the origin of our solar system, and compare variations and characteristics of planets in our solar system

    Description
    This course is an in depth study of the physical and biological aspects of the evolution of the earth with emphasis on the origin and evolution of life reflected in the rock record. The history and origin of the earth, continents, oceans and atmosphere are also explored. Methods and concepts utilized in deciphering the geologic record will be emphasized in both lecture and lab.
