    Prerequisite
    Ability to solve a variety of organic chemistry problems, demonstrating knowledge of relevant concepts through refined problem solving skills. Ability to predict the major and minor products of organic chemical reactions for the following classes of compounds: alkanes, alkyl halides, alkenes, alkynes, alcohols, ethers, epoxides, sulfides, aromatics, and conjugated polyenes. Ability to apply knowledge of the mechanistic aspects of the reactions for the classes of compounds mentioned above, to the solution of organic chemistry problems. Ability to perform organic chemistry laboratory experiments by applying the major organic chemical laboratory techniques, and by correctly operating laboratory instrumentation and equipment.     Description
    CHEM 12B is a continuation of CHEM 12A and meets the organic chemistry lecture/lab requirement for UC transfer. The course covers preparations and reactions of certain organic compound families, including aromatic, polynuclear, heterocyclic, carbonyl-containing compounds, polymers, carbohydrates, amino acids, and proteins.
