Transfers ToCSUDescriptionThis course will take a chronological approach to understand the history of public health and the global expansion of disease. An exploration of the social, economic, political and scientific events that have formed Public Health today will be examined. Epidemics from the plaque of Athens to Ebola will be understood. Understanding public health responses, and the outcomes of those responses over time will allow students a better understanding of contemporary issues public health faces today. The course will begin with an examination of early epidemics (plaque and small pox), followed by the 19th century and need for new kinds of strategies to protect the public’s health and the final section will include a focus on the twentieth century on attempts to eradicate disease, rise of organizations, agencies and re-emergence of diseases such as HIV/AIDS, SARS and Ebola. Finally, the course will end with the current Pandemic and will compare and contrast with history.
