Transfers ToNot transferableDescriptionAn evaluation of the application of ethical theory, moral reasoning, and bioethics in healthcare. Special attention will focus on an examination of racial, ethnic, class, and gender disparities in healthcare. There will be a specific focus on examining how white supremacy, colonialism, imperialism, Western white patriarchy, capitalism, racism, and Black misandry, impacts and shapes the social determinants and health outcomes of Black and Brown communities, especially Black and Brown males. Topics include, but are not limited to Black birthing mortality; provider bias; medical racism; eugenics; weathering; moral principles in bioethics (e.g. autonomy, utility, justice); moral arguments; bioethics and moral theories (e.g. Kantian ethics, Natural Law Theory, Rawls's Contract Theory, Virtue Ethics, and the Ethics of Care); paternalism and patient autonomy; truth-telling and confidentiality; human research; life and death; reproductive technology; pandemic ethics; and euthanasia and physician-assisted suicide. This upper division course is a required course and limited to those in the Respiratory Care B.S. program. All courses designated as an upper division major requirement must be completed with a minimum grade of "C" (or "P") for each course in the major.
