Key topics and historical developments include early photography's impact on painting and drawing, its relationship to ideology and social movements, and art historical movements including Photo Secessionism, Surrealism, Modernist and Post-Modernist photography. Other key themes include wartime images, the emergence of documentary photography, post-colonialism, and issues of gender, identity, and self-representation in art. There is a significant focus on contemporary art photography within diverse global art historical contexts as a tool for self-expression and empowerment.
