This course introduces students to the concepts and theories used in ethnic studies, and how to use these concepts and ideas to critically analyze the social, political, and cultural dynamics surrounding many musical genres. Students will look at how race and ethnic relations, expressions, and resistance have been key to the evolution of music in America that includes genres such as folk, blues, jazz, rock and roll, R & B, hip-hop, and more. Students will consider the evolution of popular music from various perspectives and intersectional theoretical stances, including but not limited to feminism, post/de/anti-colonialism, racialization and representation.
