- This course surveys the political, economic, cultural, social, and intellectual development of the United States from pre-colonial times to 1877. The course emphasizes the interactions among Europeans, Africans, and American Indians in North America beginning with European colonization, through the creation of the U.S. Republic, its expansion west, and the developments leading up to the Civil War and Reconstruction.
