Transfers ToCSUDescriptionThis course provides a foundation for the study of Spanish in the United States. It specifically explores the intersection of language, culture and history that has shaped Latino communities and identity in the U.S. The course further examines language ideologies, attitudes, and policies that impact the linguistic spaces in which Spanish is used across the country. The relationship between English and Spanish is explored by studying the complex relationship between dominant and minority languages, and its impact on language maintenance and erasure, and bilingualism. Spanish language varieties in the U.S. are also explored. The course is especially useful for students working in bilingual environments, including K-12 education, social work, the medical and mental health fields, community employment, and interpretation/translation. The course is conducted in English with materials available in both Spanish and English. Global Languages and Cultures Department
