Transfers ToUC and CSUCal-GETC Area 1BDescriptionThis course develops critical reading and writing strate- gies as well as analytical techniques through the reading of fiction and non-fiction texts. Components of this course include critical reading strategies, analyzing, summa- rizing, and evaluating texts and requires the writing of a minimum of 6,000 words in essays and a research paper. This course challenges students to deconstruct and reconstruct texts ultimately creating a dialogue between authors and ideas. Emphasis is placed on the ability to communicate new ideas into logically written conclusions that show an awareness of inductive and deductive rea- soning. This course also includes strategies for evaluat- ing research sources, separating fact from judgment and knowledge from belief. Basic American Sign Language Development for Deaf and Hard of Hearing Children The Basic American Sign Language Development for Deaf and Hard of Hearing Children certificate prepares students for careers where language acquisition for Deaf and hard of hearing children is critical such as the fields of audiol- ogy, childcare, education, and speech pathology. Associate Degree Programs Interpreter Education, Associate in Arts Degree (Academic Plan E037969C) The American Sign Language Interpreter Education Pro- gram (IEP) degree prepares students for a career work- ing as an entry level sign language interpreter for people who are Deaf and hard of hearing. This degree provides instruction in communication models and processes of American Sign Language, Deaf culture, interpreting skills, ethical understanding, and hands-on training in oral and manual interpreting in a wide range of situations, includ- ing Spanish-influenced settings. This degree also requires completion of 21 general education credit hours. Suc- cessful completion of this program will prepare students for certification examinations conducted in local, state, Global Languages and Cultures Department and national accrediting agencies. This degree requires a minimum of 42 credits in program requirements and gen- eral education as listed below. It is important to note that particular courses in this pro- gram may be "double counted" for the requirement of the major as well as for general education requirements, allowing students to complete the degree with 60 units. Students will develop oral and written communi- cation skills in Japanese, building proficiency across all language skills.
