    Description
This course examines the relationship between Western classical music and the cultures surrounding it at various points in history from antiquity to 1750. Major figures, trends, and developments in the early eras of Western classical music history (the Middle Ages, European Renaissance, and "Baroque" Era) are contextualized within their original social, political, economic, and other historical circumstances, as well as in the present day. Although this course is designed for music majors and other students who are fluent in reading music notation, it is open to all students.
