We offer classes in a wide range of disciplines, including Earth Science, Environmental Sci- ence, Geographic Information Systems, Meteorology, Oceanography, and of course, Anthropology, Geography, and Geology. Anthropology is the study of human beings. Anthro- pologists seek to understand all aspects of what it is to be human and explore the diversity of ways that human beings and their ancestors have forged a living over the last several million years. Cultural anthropologists com- pare living cultures and societies throughout the world to document and explain the full range of human varia- tion in beliefs and behaviors. Archaeological anthropol- ogists explore the human past and seek to understand how and why human cultures have changed over time by using materials left behind by ancient societies. Biological anthropologists examine the biological nature of humans by studying human biological and genetic diversity, the behaviors of humans' closest living relatives, the primates, and the evolution of humans as shown through the fossil record. Linguistic anthropologists study the ways humans communicate using language. Anthropology is per- haps the most broad of all social science disciplines, and a degree in anthropology can be useful in a wide range of careers, including medicine, business, marketing, law, public health, ethnic studies, cultural studies, linguistics, education, ecology, and psychology. Environmental Science studies environmental prob- lems and the impact of human activities upon the envi- ronment. The curriculum draws on coursework in biology, chemistry, geology, geography, meteorology and other sciences. However, Environmental Science is quite differ- ent from other sciences. This is science with an agenda. We seek to find answers to pressing environmental prob- lems, and to promote their resolution. Students of envi- ronmental science must not only understand the under- lying science and apply this science to solving real world problems, but they also must be prepared to engage eco- nomic and political considerations involved in achieving solutions. Environmental Science students master crucial skills in problem solving and creative thinking; gather- ing and analyzing complex environmental data; working with specialists, community members and regulators to understand environmental problems, find solutions and promote achievable resolutions. These skills are needed for finding the remedies for critical challenges to air and water quality, resource conservation, sustainability, and climate change. Students of Environmental Science have found meaningful and diverse careers as environmental consultants, air quality analysts, natural resource man- agers, environmental educators, naturalists, park rangers, conservation officers, urban planners and many others. Geography is so much more than learning about different places. Geography introduces students to the different components of nature and human society that shape the world in which we live. What sets geography apart from other disciplines is that our studies compel us to look at our world in new ways that reveal connections within the patterns of nature and societal processes that define con- temporary life. Geographers are trained to analyze and interpret geographic patterns using maps, graphs, Geo- graphic Information Systems, and other analytical tech- niques to interpret our world. Geography majors hone valuable skills in spatial thinking, geographic analysis, landscape interpretation, and field research. These skills position geographers to collaborate on solutions to such wide-ranging issues as urbanization, climate change, nat- ural disasters mitigation, environmental justice, interna- tional conflict, health, and migration. Professional geog- raphers pursue exciting careers in city and transportation planning, marketing studies, cartography, environmental impact assessment, sustainability and resource manage- ment, law enforcement, intelligence, diplomatic services, teaching, and many others. Geology is the study of the solid Earth, plus rivers, lakes, oceans, and water underground. This includes the mate- rials that form the Earth, plus Earth's structures, pro- cesses and organisms, and how they have all changed over time. Geology also includes the study of other plan- ets and moons with a solid crust. Geologists investigate hazards, including earthquakes, floods, landslides, and volcanoes, and how to avoice or mitigate damages from these events. Geologists look for earth materials, from oil to the rare metals in your phone. Geologists are also deeply concerned about environmental issues, includ- ing pollution and global warming, and many geologists work in environmental fields. Geologists work in the field, mapping the locations of faults, rock units, etc. Geologists also work in the laboratory, doing things such as analyz- ing teh isotopes in a fossil bone to figure out if dinosaurs were actually warm blooded, or exactly what happened underground to produce the shaking recorded by seis- mographs. To summarize, geologists do interesting and valuable work, in a variety of settings and in a variety of subfields. Environmental Studies: The Science in Sustainability, Associate in Arts Degree (Academic Plan E035088C) Environmental Studies is a multidisciplinary course of study that focuses on the interrelationship between humans and nature by examining the impact of human activities on natural phenomena. The curriculum prepares students to deal with the complex environmental prob- lems that confront society by providing a broad, basic understanding of how physical and human components of the environment interact. Core courses in chemistry, Anthropology, Geography and Geology Department biology and earth science introduce students to the inter- play between natural and social systems, and the ideo- logical foundations of humankind's attitudes and behav- iors with respect to their changing environments. Courses are designed to equip students with necessary skills that involve the critical understanding of the interrelationship between science and nature, helping students to be more avid in the studying and in the solving of environmental problems.
