Contact Department Chair Pablo Garcia at GarciaP4@email.laccd.edu for application. The Commission on Accreditation for Health Informat- ics and Information Management (CAHIIM) education accredit the Health Information Technology Program at East Los Angeles College. The program provides instruc- tion and Professional Practice Education (PPE) to assist students in developing the technical skills necessary to maintain components of Health Information Systems con- sistent with the medical, ethical, legal, and administrative requirements of all accreditation and regulatory agencies. Upon completion of the Health Information Technology Program, one receives an Associate in Science degree and eligibility to write the Certification Examination given by the American Health Information Management Asso- ciation. Those who pass the Certification Examination are known as Registered Health Information Technicians (RHIT). This program may be completed entirely as a day student, an evening student, on a part-time basis, or full-time. Traditionally, Registered Health Information Techni- cians have primarily been employed in the health infor- mation management departments (formerly medical record departments) of hospitals. With the rapid expan- sion of healthcare needs, opportunities for employment are increasing in managed care, ambulatory healthcare facilities and a number of other areas. Registered Health Information Technicians work with all types of health infor- mation systems, computerized data and information, including electronic medical records. RHITs are found in any organization that uses patient data. The physical exam will include documentation of two COVID-19 vaccinations. Medical Assistant, Associate in Science Degree (Academic Plan E002456C) A medical assistant interacts with doctors, nurses, tech- nicians and patients. These professionals require spe- cific technical knowledge and skills needed in the evolving healthcare field in clinics, hospitals, and physician offices, especially as new technology is introduced. Course con- tent includes anatomy and physiology, medical coding, medical terminology, clinical procedures, medical office safety, patient intake, medical law and ethics, pharmacol- ogy, phlebotomy, laboratory and other therapeutic med- ical assisting procedures. Students acquire information on the various types of exams used in different healthcare environments and where medical assistants are assimi- lated into the process. In addition to the required didac- tic and laboratory instruction classes, general education courses are taken to help strengthen writing and mathe- matics skills. An internship with local medical facilities will provide students with the opportunity to gain hands-on experience reinforcing classroom content into real world applications. Program Learning Outcomes: Communicate and collaborate professionally and effectively with patients, healthcare team, and third- party providers in diverse environments. Demonstrate a mastery of a complex body of knowl- edge and specialized skills in the cognitive (knowl- edge), psychomotor (skills), and affective (behavior) learning domains. Demonstrate and practice behavior consistent with the legal and ethical standards of the profession. Demonstrate standard, quality, safety, and risk- reduction precautions in the healthcare setting. Prepare students to display professionalism and cul- tural sensitivity while interacting and communicating with providers, staff and patients. Provide competent medical assisting care, in variety of settings, based on the entry-level competencies for a Medical Assistant.
