Topics include the chemistry and properties of biological molecules, includ- ing proteins, carbohydrates, lipids, and nucleic acids. The course also includes protein structure and function, enzyme catalysis, and the details of the central metabolic pathways (glycolysis, gluconeogenesis, glycogenolysis, the citric acid cycle, electron transport as well as oxidative phosphorylation, lipid degradation and biosynthesis, and nitrogen metabolism) including their regulation and inte- gration. The laboratory exposes the students to a variety of biochemical techniques and how they are used to eval- uate biomolecules and systems. These techniques include spectrophotometry, centrifugation, gel electrophoresis, chromatography, protein and enzyme assays, enzyme purification and kinetics, and Western blot. Chicana/o Studies Department Chicana/o Studies Department E3-580 � (323) 415-5050 The Department of Chicana/o Studies offers an innova- tive interdisciplinary curriculum that includes courses in history, literature, political science, psychology, art/culture, gender and sexuality, health sciences, and other fields, as they pertain to Mexican, Mexican-American, Cen- tral American, and other Latina/o experiences in the U.S. A study of Chicanas/os, Central Americans, and Latinas/ os positions students to participate actively in a multicul- tural society as engaged global citizens and contribut- ing community members who understand ethnic, racial, and cultural diversity in the U.S. and can compete in an increasingly global job market. In addition, the Chicana/o Studies department offers multiple courses which fulfills the LACCD GE Area 6 Ethnic Studies and Cal-GETC Area 6 Ethnic Studies. The Chicana/o Studies Department offers three degree programs including an AA in Chicana/o Studies; an Asso- ciate's Degree for Transfer (ADT) in Social Justice Stud- ies: Chicano Studies; and the first and only AA in Central American Studies in the state of California. All three degree programs prepare students at the under- graduate level for dedicated community service and a multitude of exciting careers. In the Cen- tral American Studies curriculum, students are exposed to the scholarship and theoretical framework of Central American Studies and promotes an understanding and appreciation of the diverse Central American cultures, ethnicities, experiences, and worldviews from an interdis- ciplinary global perspective. An Associate's in Arts degree in Central American Studies presents an opportunity to explore, critically examine and understand the diversity, and it establishes a network of Central American special- ists. The degree offers knowledge that cultivates local, regional and transborder experiences. The degree fur- ther prepares students to enter in fields that include but are not limited to advocacy, leadership, politics, nonprofit, education, social counseling, journalism, law studies and immigration, indigenous rights, medicine, business and entrepreneurship, gender studies, arts, entertainment and film.
