Repeat attempts do not count against the applicant. Transfer coursework taken outside the LACCD that is desired for use to satisfy associate degree and/ or program prerequisites must satisfy the minimums required by ELAC as specified below. Transfer courses that match the class content as stated in the ELAC catalog but not necessarily the unit totals listed below may be peti- tioned (See section on Transfer Students). 1. COMM C100 or COMM 121 = 3 semester units 2. Human Anatomy (ANATOMY 001) = 4 semester units or BIOLOGY 020 (a combined course of Anatomy/Physiol- ogy = 8 semester units) 3. Human Physiology (PHYSIOL 001) = 4 semester units or BIOLOGY 020 (a combined course of Anatomy/Physiol- ogy = 8 semester units 4. Introductory General Chemistry (CHEM 051 or CHEM 065 or higher-level Chemistry course ) = 4-5 semester units 5. Statistics course (STAT C1000 or STAT C1000E) = 4 semester units or College Algebra course (MATH 245) = 3 semester units or any higher level math course. 6. Medical Terminology (HLTHTEK 133) and Survey of Respi- ratory Therapy (RESP TH 101) are both program prereq- uisites as well as major requirements. Both should be taken in the semester immediately prior to program admission and both MUST be completed before the student can begin the respiratory therapy program. Freshman Composition (ENGL C1000, ENGLISH 101Z, or E.S.L. 110) is not required for admission into the respiratory ther- apy program; however, it is a required element of all asso- ciate degrees conferred by ELAC and must be completed prior to filing a graduation petition. GENERAL EDUCATION ACADEMIC ADVISEMENT: Students must periodically meet with an academic counselor to review their progress towards the ELAC Associate Degree General Education (GE) requirements. Per AP 4100, this degree is considered a high unit major with major require- ments that exceed 37 units. The following LACCD GE areas 4a (3 units) and 7 (3 units) are waived for this degree. APPLICATION SUBMISSION: Each fall semester, a cohort group of fifty (50) applicants is selected to begin the two- year sequence of coursework in the RT Program. No stu- dent may enroll directly into the RT Program; students must first submit an application, then be formally selected BEFORE they may enroll into any RESP TH course EXCEPT RESP TH 101. A complete application must be received by the RT Program BEFORE the student will be considered for possible admission. All applicants will be notified via email within two weeks of their application submission whether the application is incomplete or complete. If the application is determined to be incomplete, the applicant will be notified what is required to complete the application. Incomplete applica- tions will be held for only one year; if not completed within a year, they will be discarded. Completed applications are placed into cohort applicant pool. Applications must be submitted with transcripts to verify the completion of the required prerequisite coursework; for students utilizing classes taken within the nine-cam- pus LACCD system, unofficial transcripts from the Student Information System (SIS) are permitted. Students who wish to use courses taken outside LACCD must first transfer those courses to ELAC for acceptance; please refer to the section below regarding the process for Transfer Students. The annual application period will run from the start of the fall semester until the end of the spring semester; this time may be extended at the discretion of the RT Program Director if the cohort capacity has not been reached. Pre- clinical clearances such as the health examination, drug screening, background check and CPR certification are not required at the time of application. Please Note: Do NOT submit the RT application to the College Admissions Office. TRANSFER STUDENTS: For RT applicants, if any portion of the prerequisite courses have been taken outside of the nine campus LACCD system, one set of official transcripts from each outside institution must be sent directly from the originating college or university to the ELAC Admis- sions Office AND a second set attached to the application for admission when submitted to the Respiratory Ther- apy Program. For the College to accept this outside course work in satisfaction of any program or degree require- ment, the student must submit both a "General Petition" to the campus Admissions Office AND a "Challenge Petition" to the Department Chair for approval; all documentation in support of both petitions must be attached at the time of submission. IN-PROGRESS APPLICANTS: Students who are in the pro- cess of completing the last of the prerequisite require- ments may submit an application to the program, pro- vided they include proof of enrollment in all outstanding classes at the time of submission. Any applicant who does not provide proof of the satisfactory completion of all remaining prerequisite class (es) will not be considered for admission. PRIORITY APPLICANT STATUS: The RT Program offers prior- ity admission status to active duty military members, vet- erans and their (current) spouses provided they meet all other existing admission requirements. Priority enrollment status is also granted to any alternate from a prior cohort year who was not able to enroll into that cohort. Priority applicants are not subject to the applicant lottery process. SELECTION PROCESS: If the applicant pool exceeds the CoARC-mandated cohort size, all non-priority applicant names will be placed into a lottery pool. A blind draw will be utilized to randomly select the applicant names which will be placed on a list according to their lottery number. The Respiratory Therapy Program will inform applicants of the results of the lottery selection by e-mail approximately two (2) weeks after the application deadline. ALTERNATE LIST: An additional number of names, no more than ten (10%) of the total cohort capacity, will be selected from any remaining names in the applicant pool for a position on the cohort alternate list. A blind draw will also be utilized to randomly select from the remain- ing applicant pool names which will be placed on the list of alternates according to their lottery number. Should an admitted applicant be unable to or declines to enroll in the cohort, the first name on the alternate pool list will be given the opportunity to enroll. The process will con- tinue as needed, until all names on the alternate list have been exhausted. If a vacancy in the cohort still remains, Respiratory Therapy Department a second alternate list will be drawn from any remaining names in the applicant pool and the cohort selection pro- cess repeated until the cohort is full. Any alternate who is not selected for admission in to the Program will be given priority registration in the next available cohort. Program Learning Outcomes: � Demonstrate competent and safe equipment manip- ulation including lab simulations and patient contact during clinical rotations. � Evaluate patient data to develop respiratory care treatment plan recommendations that initiate and modify therapeutic procedures, and infection and quality control.
