    Description
This course surveys magic, witchcraft, and religion across world cultures. Students engage with core theoretical perspectives from anthropology to examine the functions and symbolic meanings attached to diverse supernatural practices and beliefs (e.g., oracles and divination, ancestor worship, funerary rites) as well as how these belief systems intersect with colonialism and anticolonialism, science, and social identities. Students explore comparative analysis and synthesis of anthropological concepts and ethnographic research to generate insights into the enduring and ever- changing religious landscape in the U.S., despite living in a proclaimed "rational" enlightened and scientific society.
