    Description
    This course provides a survey of early American literature from before first contact through the Civil War, a body of work comprising diverse cultures, traditions, and genres. The course focuses on the development of literary forms and the relation between texts and broader historical, political, aesthetic and cultural themes and conditions. The course also exposes students to distinguishing elements of selected literary forms and to the art and practice of analyzing and writing about literature.
