This course offers a survey of speculative fiction as a literary form. Covering a range of literary genres and a variety of texts from diverse cultures, the course considers major authors, developments in the genre over time, and important themes. This course uses critical approaches to analyze the ways historical, social, economic, psychological, philosophical, and aesthetic forces shape science fiction and fantasy. The distinguishing elements of different literary genres and methods used to analyze literature of any genre will also be covered.
