The major events, policies, themes, experiences, and Black/African American people that shaped the history of the United States will be analyzed. This course will help students understand the role of Black/African Americans in the political, social and economic life of the United States from Reconstruction to the Jim Crow era, to the modern Civil Rights Movement to the Black Power Movement to the Black Lives Matter movement against police brutality and the prison industrial complex impacting Black/African Americans today. How institutions, policies, social norms, and laws have historically, and currently oppressed/oppress Black/African Americans will also be examined.
