Transferable: CSU; UC General Education: Local GE L3; Cal-GETC Area 3A This course is an historical, comprehensive, and comparative listeners survey of the traditions of Jazz music from around the world and in the United States, in which concepts of ethnicity, ethnocentrism, racism, ageism, class differences, and gender issues will be addressed. Guided listening presentations will show how African and early African-American musical traditions have led to the development of various improvisational forms and styles, including Ragtime, Swing, Bebop, Free Jazz, Fusion, and Acid Jazz. Jazz style of the Americas, Asia, Africa, India, and Europe will be covered.
