This course will explore the diversity of social, political, economic, personal, cultural, and gender-based experiences of Chicanas/os and Latinos/as through the use of poetry, novels, short stories, and essays written by such authors. Students will explore how Chicana/o and Latina/o authors address themes of identity, migration, cultural hybridity and mestizaje, and resistance, delving into specific issues like the impact of U.S. imperialism on Latin American countries, the Chicano Movement, and the experiences of Latinx immigrants facing economic hardship and systemic racism. Topics such as Chicana feminist border theory, queer Latinx/e identity, and indigenous sovereignty movements will be central to the course's examination of social justice issues. The course will also provide an Ethnic Studies interdisciplinary and intersectional theoretical framework for the study of race, ethnicity, class, gender, and sexuality as it relates to Chicanos/as and Latinos/as.
