This survey course stresses the integrative and disintegrative forces that culminated in the Civil War. Long-range issues arising during this period are examined for their significance to Americans today. The cultural, social, economic, geographic, diplomatic and political factors involved in the evolution of American society are also analyzed through a variety of chronological topics.
