Conduct simple conversations in Spanish, demonstrating level appropriate pronunciation, speaking proficiency, and listening comprehension. Read, interpret, and discuss texts in Spanish that demonstrates level appropriate proficiency. Write sentences, dialogs, short paragraphs, and simple correspondence demonstrating level appropriate proficiency. Demonstrate knowledge and awareness of diverse people and cultures of Spanish-speaking countries as well as the Spanish-speaking communities in the United States. Objectives Understand the cultural nuances of everyday life in the Hispanic world. Communicate orally and in writing in a variety of meaningful real life activities moving toward the intermediate level of proficiency on the national ACTFL scale (American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages). Greet and express leave-taking phrases by comparing and contrasting appropriate phrases used in Spanish speaking countries. Express likes and dislikes/wishes and preferences. It reviews and expands upon the vocabulary and grammatical structures introduced in Elementary Spanish I, and it develops the student's ability to engage in casual conversation, express opinions, and make suggestions in Spanish. Emphasis is on the preterit and imperfect tenses of the indicative mood. The course also provides for increased awareness of the Spanish-speaking world's history, geography, and customs, including socio-political practices. Students will continue to interact with authentic language in cultural context.
