Using philosophical methods of inquiry, students will study issues such as the arguments for and against theism, the relationship between God and language, the problem of evil, the cognitive components of religious experience, the relationship between God and morality, and the distinctions between faith and reason. Emphasis is on the explication of traditional and contemporary primary philosophical works, including historical philosophers such as Boethius, Anselm, Aquinas, Leibniz, Hume, Calvin, Luther, Erasmus, Kierkegaard, and Kant and contemporary philosophers such as William Lane Craig, Richard Swineburne, Alvin Plantinga, Sam Harris, and Christopher Hitchens.
