The course will focus on the creation and evolution of independent nation-states and the importance of social revolutions in the region-- most notably in Mexico, Cuba, and Nicaragua. Special emphasis will be placed on the region's historical relationship to the United States and the many associated relevant themes in contemporary society. In addition, the course will provide students with the tools to interpret primary sources written during the historical period covered.
