In addition to covering the major cultures and civilizations of the ancient world, it also addresses the development of the classical civilizations of Greece, the Hellenistic world and Rome; the transition through the medieval period, including the development of the Byzantine Empire, the rise and expansion of Islam, and the emergence of a new civilization, "Christendom," in Western Europe; to the transformations of the Age of Exploration, the Renaissance, and the Reformation. In particular, the course introduces the major social, economic, political, intellectual and cultural developments that shaped what came to be known as "the West."
