By examining different aspects of American culture (literature, films, television programs, paintings, photographs) the course analyzes the history of topics like slavery, segregation, and civil rights; capitalism, wealth, poverty, and economic inequality; women, gender identity, and sexual orientation; immigration; and the colonization of California and the American West.
