    Description
First semester of a two-semester sequence in organic chemistry for natural science majors focusing on molecular structure, physical properties, and application to chemical reactivity. Specifically, emphasis is placed upon reaction mechanisms, energetics, stereochemistry, retrosynthesis, and spectroscopy. Laboratory experiments focus on purification and analysis techniques such as recrystallization, chromatography, distillations, and liquid-liquid extractions. These techniques are applied to the synthesis and hands- on analysis of organic compounds using modern instrumentation.
