Beginning with the Scientific Revolution, this course explores the economic, political, social, scientific, technological, artistic, and religious developments of the West. Topics include the Scientific Revolution; the Enlightenment; the "Age of Revolutions" (including the American, Haitian and French Revolutions), industrialization, nationalism, imperialism; modern ideologies; the emergence of totalitarianism; the World Wars, the Cold War, the Korean War, the Vietnam War; and other cultural, economic, intellectual, and political developments. These topics are explored through the analytical lenses of race, class, gender, and ethnicity. This course also examines the impact and influence, both negative and positive, of Western societies in a global context.
