Students examine the constitutions, structure, and operation of governing institutions, civil liberties and civil rights, political behaviors, political issues, and public policy using political science theory and methodology. The course emphasizes national government but provides an understanding of government at the state and local level as well. Particular attention is paid to the dynamics, which make the principles meaningful and the machinery operate. Students develop insights into the clash of ideas in American politics and how they can influence political outcomes.
