This course focuses on mental health concepts related to individuals, families, and communities, emphasizing the nurse-client relationship, commonly occurring mental illnesses, psychopharmacology, and other major treatment modalities. Community mental health issues such as environmental stressors, abuse, violence, substance abuse, and homelessness are emphasized. The course also focuses on the care of older adults, emphasizing promoting healthy aging, managing common geriatric syndromes and chronic illnesses, and addressing end-of-life care. Impacts of an increasing aging population on the health care system, and ethical, legal, and public policy issues in the care of older adults are included.
