This course surveys representative literature from around the world, from ancient times to the 17th century (excluding British and American literature). Students explore a diverse range of works in translation from a variety of cultural traditions, including epics from ancient civilizations, foundational texts from the world's major religions, timeless works of drama and performance, and classics that have influenced literature and culture around the world up to today. Students analyze and compare selected works while exploring the significance of translation, historical context, cultural exchange, and the evolution of literary forms around the world and throughout the centuries.
