In this course, students receive instruction in academic reading and writing, including writing processes, effective use of language, analytical thinking, and the foundations of academic research. Students read and discuss a variety of works from different literary genres, focusing on non-fiction and expository texts. The course also emphasizes writing clear, powerful, and engaging papers with an authentic voice and style using a variety of writing strategies, reading materials, and research skills, including evaluating and documenting sources, using MLA style, and practicing academic integrity. Students write several essays in expository and argumentative prose, including at least one research paper, in response to class reading and outside research, for a minimum of 5,000 words. Requires 4 TBA meetings with a tutor in the RWL or OWC during the semester.
