Students work with greater relative independence, choosing from among several possible assignments and directions to develop a personal style and subject matter according to individual student research and/or creative interests. Subjects for paintings may include contemporary conceptual or political topics, expression of emotional feeling, and/or narrative. Experimentation that challenges the student's artistic boundaries, habits, and comfort zones will be emphasized as the problem of how to engage and sustain a viewer's interest through meaningful painting content, composition, and facture becomes central to ones painting practice.
