    This course introduces students to the concept of hazard mitigation and its role in reducing long-term risks to life and property from hazard events. It covers mitigation principles in the context of emergency/disaster management and the role of the emergency management worker as one of the four essential phases of the emergency management cycle. Topics include a history of hazard mitigation in the U.S., risk assessment, hazard types, mitigation strategies, and planning activities with the goal of decreasing hazard impact on local communities.
