    Description
This course surveys the forms and functions of supernatural beliefs and associated rituals in in various societies from a cross-cultural perspective. It asks: What do we know about the origins of belief systems? Why do people in most societies believe in unseen spirits and powers? How do people use supernatural or special powers to gain control over their own lives or the lives of others? Emphasis is on understanding beliefs and rituals within their social contexts, and on broad comparisons to derive insights into the general functions of beliefs and rituals in human life.
