    Description
In this course, students receive instruction in critical thinking for purposes of constructing, evaluating, and composing arguments in a variety of rhetorical forms, using primarily non-fiction texts, refining writing skills and research strategies developed in ENGL C1000 Academic Reading and Writing (C-ID ENGL 100) or similar first-year college writing course. This course is designed to develop critical thinking, reading, and writing skills beyond the level achieved in English 1A (CCN: ENGL C1000) to prepare students for upper division research and writing. This course will focus on the development of logical reasoning, analysis, argumentation, and information literacy through the use of primarily non-fiction texts. Students will write arguments using various types of rhetorical techniques and engage in academic discourse that explores diverse experiences and current issues. A minimum of 5,000 written words is required over the term. May be offered as an Honors course. Note: ENGL C1001 replaced ENGL-1B (CCN: ENGL C1001) beginning with the fall 2026 term.
