Transfers ToUC and CSUIGETC Area 1C · CSU GE Area A1DescriptionThis course develops methods of critical inquiry and advocacy and provides foundational knowledge and practice of public speaking while including Aristotle's Appeals (proofs of rhetoric). Identifying fallacies in reasoning and language, testing evidence, and evidence sources, advancing a reasoned position, and defending and refuting arguments. Includes researching and analyzing significant social issues, propositions, political issues. Oral presentations and evaluations of oral and written arguments for faculty-supervised and evaluated speeches. Course covers how, within a democratic society, to communicate ideas using informative and persuasive evidence through written and oral discourse. The incorporation and use of argumentation language sensitive to diversity, equity, inclusion, belonging, and accessibility. This course includes analysis of evidence for validity and the process of reasoning needed for effective arguing and presentation of arguments and positions.
