It includes a survey of the general principles of cell, molecular and evolutionary biology. Emphasis is on the following topics: chemistry of life, cellular organization, biological membranes, energetics, genetics, evolution and diversity of prokaryotes, Protista, and fungi. Laboratory exercises emphasize the application of these topics, especially to biotechnology. This course along with BIOL 20B is the recommended sequence for STEM majors.
