This course studies the works of William Shakespeare, focusing on representative plays, with emphasis upon their structure, their linguistic artistry, their connection to his poetic works, and their impact on culture. Attention is given both to the historical contexts (Shakespeare's life; the philosophical, aesthetic, cultural, and sociological realities of the Elizabethan age; the conventions of its theatre) and to the relevance of Shakespeare's work to today's audiences. The course allows students many opportunities for critical analysis, through reading, writing, class discussions, and the viewing of relevant film texts.
