It emphasizes how these countries responded to the challenges of modernity and western imperialism by embracing new ideas, new approaches to statecraft, and new social and cultural norms. Topics include the emergence of western dominance in Asia, the breakdown of states and empires in conjunction with, and partly as a result of, western imperialism, the development of Asian nationalisms and nationalist movements, and the growth of Japanese imperialism and the effects that this had on the rest of Asia.Usually HeldTue Thu 10:30am–11:50am
