Topics include economic, social, cultural, and political developments. The course addresses the Constitution of the State of California; the nature and processes of California state and local governments; and the relationships between the U.S. government and California's state and local governments. Topics include the impact of the Constitution of 1879, consequences of railroad expansion, and early twentieth-century urbanization. It also includes the impact of the Great Depression and World War II, water projects, protest and reform movements of the 1960s, the rise of conservatism, and recent political trends.
