This course is a survey of United States history from its European, African, and Native American backgrounds to 1877. It examines the origin and development of many of this nation's political, social, economic, and intellectual institutions including their influences upon contemporary American life. It also emphasizes such historical concepts as cause and effect, multiple causation, historical context, and historical interpretation.
